In my opinion, community leaders could put together programs that would put senior citizens with adolescents. Senior citizens have so much life and wisdom that the community's youth could really benefit from. In the video material from this week, it was mentioned that in Chinese culture, life does not begin until you are at least 60 years of age. People who are 60 and above have experience so much that they could pass on to our youth. It was also mention in the video material that in some cultures, elders are considered to be teachers. It is these attitudes we need to properly utilize are senior citizens. There are already programs that match senior citizens with other senior citizens that are experiencing problems, why not match senior citizens that have experienced certain issues in their youth with our youth who are experiencing the same problem.
If we were to change our attitudes towards the elderly and gain from their wisdom, especially during our younger years, we could really benefit as a community. Senior citizens have selected optimism, which allows them to enjoy what they have. They can teach us how to do that sooner, which in turn will make us happier people. We can also learn how to develop passions earlier in life, which will make the aging process healthier and easier.
Senior citizens could benefit from this because they will have a feeling of being needed. Not only will they be needed, but they will be aiding the overall benefit of our community. Also, they won't feel so lonely because they will be interacting and building relationships with the community. They will have a reason to keep going and keep living.
