Internship Programme For Library Science Professionals - July to Dec 2012
Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd. is a diversified entity with turnover in excess of INR 4400 crores. We have an international presence with 20 manufacturing bases spread over 5 continents. Our products are supplied to 110 countries with able assistance from 3000 dealers and distributors worldwide.
We are the second largest Micro-Irrigation company in the world. We nurture a Hi- Tech Agri Institute, a Farm Resource R&D, Demo, Training & Extension Centre and undertake projects for agricultural and irrigation development in totality. Over 1000 agri and irrigation scientists, engineers, technologists and technicians are engaged in offering consultancy for watershed development through wasteland transformation, crop selection and rotation.
We are also the largest plastic pipe manufacturers in India and 'Total Solution Providers' for various thermoplastic piping systems. We process tropical fruits and the agricultural and fruit processing waste is converted into organic manure. Thus Jain Irrigation is the only company in India which is not only a pioneer manufacturer of hitech agricultural inputs, but is also a Total Agri-Service provider, large farm cultivator and an agricultural consultancy organization. Through such multi-dimensional activity profile we have become a 'one-stop hi-tech agri shop'.
Padma Shri Dr. Bhavarlal Hiralal Jain alias Bhau, our Founder Chairman, hailed from a humble farmer family of a remote village by name Wakod in north western Maharashtra. He who did not learn the English alphabet till he was 13, went on to obtain his degrees in Commerce and Law from reputed colleges in Mumbai. These colleges opened a new world of books and thereby a new world of knowledge before him. Form then on, the knowledge enthusiast in him started collecting books. In the last 50 years of his journey as a trader, manufacturer, social entrepreneur and philanthropist, he has built up a collection of over 40,000 books. Himself an acclaimed author, Bhau is a great benefactor of books, writers and libraries. Land lab and library - these three 'L's - signify his unique life.
The agri business started by Bhau grew into a knowledge intensive activity over the years. Agronomy, plastic manufacturing, tissue culture, food processing, bio technology, non-conventional energy - all these are 'happening' areas, on account of the day-to-day technological advances. Technical books and journals were a prerequisite for the efficient functioning of each of these divisions. The Jain Hi-Tech Agri Institute accredited by many universities as a centre of research and the internationally comparable bio-tech laboratory extended our foray into the knowledge domain. In short, we have an invaluably large knowledge base.
JISL has chosen 'Leave the world better than you found it' as its Mission. Social awareness and environmental sustainability are built into it. To actualize this mission, we work in the CSR sector in a big way. Anubhuti, the unique residential school and Gandhi Research Foundation (GRF) are but two examples of this. Anubhuti has nearly 6000 books and a large number of magazines. GRF has a specialized collection of Gandhiana in English and Indian languages numbering about 8000. It has over 2500 electronic book replicas and a very huge collection of archival material relating to Gandhi, Vinoba Bhave and Mahadeo Desai, to name a few. Arguably, it is one of the largest collections on Gandhi's life and work.
We are striving to systematize our entire library services by integrating their operations. All books are being taken up for classification under Dewey Decimal Classification and catalogued as per AACR2. A library policy manual is being prepared, a corporate intranet is being developed and web hosting of information resources is being planned. A knowledge portal for Anubhuti and networking of GRF with various international organizations / research centres are on the anvil.
All participants at the proposed internship programme will get opportunity to work in all these areas. Needless to say, it would be a tremendous opportunity for young library professionals embarking on their careers.
