Values are different for every person but are deep inside every human being. Values offer us guidance on how we should govern our lives in a positive way. With a good set of values, our society can be a good place to live. In community psychology, it teaches us about five basic values; are holism, health, caring, compassion and support for community structures, self- determination, participation, social justice, and accountability to oppressed groups. These five values service not only the individual, but also groups of people as well whether it is someone who is psychologically in need of help or people facing oppression. These values teach empathy and help empower a person to be a leader. As discussed in one of the videos for this week, community psychology wants to reach people where they can act as prevention rather than intervention. It strives to better people's lives and to assist with those who need it throughout the community. In the UNC video, they had a clear mindset as to what they wanted to put into action. They wanted to help people who needed assistance and be able to give them the tools and skills to be able to be contributing members of society.
In my opinion, values are vital in today's society and with every individual. Values help is become better people and it gives us a clear direction and how we can help those around us and in our community. I think that without values, we would be worse off. People wouldnt have an understanding of right and wrong and it would be hard for us as individuals to have a voice or make a difference. Having values also makes us accountable and it helps us decide the things that we should be doing in this world.
