On April 11, 2009 we had a meeting at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA)to discuss UCP-SARnet's contribution to the " Training workshop for citizen participation in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals". This workshop is a component event in the upcoming World Civic Forum 2009 to be held at the COEX, Seoul. It is organized by the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs ( UNDESA) together with the Socio-Economic and Governance Branch (SGMB) of the Division for Public Administration and Development Management ( DPADM).
Our role will be to contribute to the session on " Partnerships and networking among United Nations and institutions for higher education, including schools of public administration." We also discussed our potential participation in the development of online instructional materials for local governments, community leaders and teachers.
The workshop aims to provide a platform for national and local government officials and representatives of civil society and of the academic community to gain a better understanding of the concept of citizen and community engagement and participation in the processes and practices of public institutions, and especially in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The goals of the workshop are:
1. build the capacity of central and local government officials, representatives of civil society organizations and of the academic community to gain a better understanding of the concept of citizen and community engagement and participation in the processes and practices of public institutions and its role in good governance;
2. enhance their capacities at the local and national levels for MDG implementation through the engagement of civil society, community based organizations and other stakeholders in government policy making and processes;
3. promote linkages among academia, including schools of public administration, civil society and the United Nations to build a knowledge base and partnerships on civic action for the global agenda.
