Enhancing sustainable practices while maximizing human potential.
The first volunteer activity that I coordinated for the spring 2013 semester was the Point-In-Time Homeless Count which took place in the last week of January. It was a great experience. This was the fifth homeless count conducted in Maricopa County coordinated by the Maricopa Association of Governments in which 100's of volunteers participated during a four hour frame to find and interview as many homeless persons within our region. In order for Arizona to be able to provide more resources for the homeless, a count of the homeless population is necessary. This event brought community leaders together to practice leadership and communication skills, while learning about current community issues around us.
The next event was the City of Tempe's Regional Walk for Unity and Diversity at the Tempe Beach Park. There was an immense feeling of togetherness and diversity. There were cultural performances that took place after the walk along with free food. The mayor of Tempe participated and gave a speech. I encourage all who are interested in bringing the community together to participate in this event annually.
Yhe next event that some of us members participated in was the World Cultural Festival at Arizona State University, Main Campus. We watched a cultural fashion show and hung out as a team.
The next volunteer activity members of the team participated in was Devils in Disguise, which is a huge coordinated volunteer event at Arizona State every year. Our group went to a refugee center in Downtown Phoenix. We worked together to paint the conference room and helped out in the clothing donation room.
The next activity I coordinated was the Adopt-A-Street clean up at the end of the semester. Even though there were only two members along with my two year old daughter, we accomplished cleaning up the mile in an hour and a half! UCP-SARnet now owns one mile on Southern Avenue, in between Rural Road and Mill Avenue for the next three years. At least one clean up every three months has to be conducted. Our name should be on two signs soon! I will keep you all updated!
