Many believe that for an approach to achieving the Millenium Development Goals set out by the United Nations requires action on the ground overseas in the areas that need it most. This might very well be true, but an important area that's often overlooked in these efforts, is the value of connections, networks, relationships. An intersting term has been surfacing to describe this value coined Social Capital.
Although a definition of social capital is still forming, there is widespread consensus building that this is indeed an important indicator in International Development and is precisely what UCP-SARnet is out to support.
There are many more sources of information on this topic and more will become available as time goes on. For the time being, I would recommend looking through the Wikipedia entry on Social Capital as a starting point for more information.
