Meeting Highlights: This meeting was entirely devoted to the planning of the Stand-Up Against Poverty Event at ASU.
Date: Friday, September 23, 2011
Time: 8am - 10am
MISSION Statement for STAND-UP Against POVERTY Events: "We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than a billion of them are currently subjected." --- Millennium Declaration
Though a date was initially set for our STAND-UP event at ASU to be held in October, we will be pushing the event to November so that more of the executive team members can attend and participate in this, since there are currently conflicts in timings. Once the exact date is confirmed we will be reserving the location - possibly Hayden Lawn as well as the MU Stage area.
Like last year, we hope to have cultural entertainment such as samba and capoeira dancers to grasp the attention of passer-bys. But we definitely want to include an interactive element to the whole event. The event coordinators, Olivia and Fritz, will be contacting as many community organizations, interfaith groups, and ASU Clubs as possible (all related to the vision of ending poverty and accomplishing the MDGs). We hope to have tables for each group/organization, including UCP-SARnet, for students to interact with us all and find out how they can get involved on campus and in the surrounding community. Humza is also securing funding, and then subsequently designing and ordering spirit bracelets to hand out at the event which we will most likely be calling the "SUN DEVILS STAND-UP 2011 EVENT".
Another really important element we want for this year's event is to get reasonable pledges - things that our fellow students/ASU community members can really accomplish that are not too farfetched and difficult for them to commit to - and also to follow up on these pledges. We plan on putting together an awareness brochure to hand out which will list all of the organizations and clubs and how students can get involved in them as well as to list upcoming events especially the events coordinated by the President's Interfaith Campus Challenge group at ASU; one possibility is for people to pledge to attend these events or to get involved in any of the various clubs/organizations.
We closed the meeting with a reminder for each of us to contact all the members of the UCP-SARnet network to encourage planning/participation in STAND-UP events of their own. Olivia and Fritz are going to designate the various tasks that need to be accomplished to us all and we will each be working weekly to keep the event planning on track. More details on this event to come when confirmed!
