In Chapter 14 of Nelson and Prilleltensky's book described and explained "marginalization". Marginalization is experienced by millions of people around the world, this concept is simply dependant on how social status changes and will move a group in and out of marginalization. For example, the Freedom Fighters were very popular and respected, but as soon as they lost favor in the eyes of society they became a marginalized group. Marginalization also depends on certain stages of life cycles that an individual is in that may increase or decrease the likliness that they will be marginalized. An example of this is children and youth, marginalization may decrease as athey get older. It may also be dependant on those who are associated with you, for example the status of a single mother changes as her child gets older therefore having an impact on whether or not she is marginalized. This is important because when a person is being marginalized they have impact on their society and rarely influence social change, and are often times forced into solitude.
In order for world leaders eto eliminate the issue of marginalization they must create a sense of community. As I stated earler people who are marginalized tend to be isolated and are not connected to other people in their community. The litte boy, Ivan, in the 20/20 video presented for class this week was scared to go to kindergarten because he didn't want the other kids to make fun of him. If a better sense of community is created so feelings like this can be eliminated (much like it was after the school day was over) then this sense of marginalization may go away. They can start by creating more support systems deeply wooven into the community ran by community members so that those who are marginalized feel supported within their own community.
