Link to Article and Reasons behind choosing social work
I chose this article because it reflects the history of social work in relation to community development. Being as history has shown that the when things get rough in a community, those community members ban together to facilitate change further proves that social work is at the root of growing communities that can work together in order to promote change. The reading this week referred to the settlement movement as being a major begining for social work in this country. Social wokers were able to see that there were problems of course, however the social workers were also able to see that there were solutions within the community and strengths tat could be played upon in order to succeed in finding answers to the problems at hand. Social workers have been referred to as enablers, as they point out the strengths within a community or a single person and allow that person or community to see that they are capable of making the changes they wish to see. Social workers are able to give those community members and the community as a whole a voice or speak for them so that those who need to hear can actually listen and hear the problems at hand. I believe that social work makes the biggest impact because social workers see the strengths that are already within individuals that can contribute to the group as a whole and accomplish goalsset forth by the community. Social work can also be a form of prevention from larger problems arising, should the community or the social worker be aware of a pattern or posible danger the community may be facing. Encorporating community psychology into the discussion as the prevention of problems and how community members work together stems from he settlement movement and the strides that social workers made in changing how groups of people are viewed and advocating for change and equality among all commuity members.
