What are your reflections on the idea of setting Millennium Development Goals by the United Nations as well as on the implementation of this idea? What is in your opinion the status of MDGs in Poland?

I think that it's a good idea to establish the Development Goal theat will stimulate people to work hard. What's more, people who are working in the UN should take advantages from there own countries ,there for the MDG is quite comprehensive. however, in my opintion, to make the MDG better, I would like to give some examples to tell people the negative consequences of fail. For instance, people who didn't finish the studding in primary school. sometimes punishment has stronger influences than reward.

No matter in any countries well graduated and well earned people always have good life, hence we should pay more attention on poor people than wealthy population and consider about the condition of thr country, for example, in Poland, reducing the alcohol using. I think there are always two ways to develop: one is increasing the positive facts; the second is decreasing the negative facts. So i would like to try to add those negative decreasing conditions into the MDG. however i am wondering maternal motality and people liev with HIV are connected with my idea.

The question is what are my reflections. I have a lot of reflections. On one hand my thoughts About us- Europians are unfortunatley not too good... Each day I see hoe much food we throw away into the trash! We waste liters of water! We spend so much money on unimportant things as clothes, toys which are mostly made in third world countries in unfair conditions. And we still want more, more and more! When I saw this films I was shocked! Numbers are huge. I can't imagine myself living in conditions that thESE people must live.

But on the other hand I am proud of some people who take care not just about themselves and want to change the world. I find MDG-s goals really needed and realistic.

I can see a lot of poverty also in Poland. Lots of people use too much alcohol and are drug users. We see poor orphants widought help and care. Also medical care in our country is not on the best level- it's really hard to get to a specialists.

All in all, I can see a lot of changes. There is a lot of  social organizations and campaigns which try to help peple in our country and "in the third world countries".

I hope we will be able to see all of MDG-s goals come truth.

Having something planned, in this case having Millenium Development Goals, is a great idea to simply make our world better. Our world, regardless of the country, nation, religion, culture, bad or good times has been struggling with poverty, hunger, unemployment, and many, many other factors that have been preventing human being from a decent living. MDG is a good idea to fight these obstacles, to improve living conditions, especially among the poorest nations.

Importantly, We dont have to be a powerful and influential people to join and help realizing the goals. Everyone can do something for others, to make the world better.

When it comes to my reflections about Poland and its status... Well there is still a lot to do. Although some of the goals, such as education are relatively in a good state, there is still a room for improvement in such areas like gender equality or developing a global partnerships. There is still not enough education concerning HIV , especially among teenagers. I remember my conversation some weeks ago with a woman who works with HIV people. She told me that Polish high schools do not let them do the anti-HIV campaigns at schools!! They are even not allowed to put posters at schools informing about free HIV testing or meetings. It is very sad that this topic, which is a huge threat for the population, is still considered as a taboo.

Before this assignment I had heard one or two things about this MDG movement and the summit that was held in 2000 with the 189 nation leaders. The aims of the movement are great and they certainly focus on areas that are of importance to everyone. Poverty & hunger are such factors that if not broken they run like an endless cycle, so the plan for intervention will have a drastic effect on the future conditions of the world later. Education and gender equality are abit deeper than the surface and can evoke some unexplained reactions f not treated with care because in many countries these factors are engraved in the cultural ways of the people. hence, the people of a given nation or people must see the need for the change otherwise the MDG efforts will only seem meaningless.
While the child mortality, maternal health and combating diseases are all connected to health. Which is one of the most important aras because for any development to be efficient the persons involved have to be healthy enough to grow and develop.
The last two factors that the nation leaders created the movement for are global partnership and environmental sustainability; both are vital elements/ factors for the movement to become a reality. Because the same way we depend on the environment and the environmental conditions depend reversely on how we treat it, so it is with the global partnership, we need each other to grow and survive. It's no longer survival of the fittest; but rather survival of OUR human species. Hence, I think its a wonderful and remarkable initiative for the UN nations to have set the goal towards (which is the first step towards accomplishing) growth of each of us,individually and collectively.

As for the specific status of Poland, I'm not sure what it is exactly because I couldn't find specific information regarding Poland when I check the MDG Monitor. There was insuffient information regarding the status of the progress by goal in Poland. So I guess that means that movement has been implemented in Poland but it may not have been documented.

I think setting goals is a great way to motivate communities to change. However, I must say that I think these goals are a bit unattainable. Some may call me pessimistic, but I think I'm being realistic, when I say that ending world poverty by 2015 is just plain impossible. The problem with unrealistic goal-setting is that it decreases motivation and a belief in success.

Instead of saying 'end extreme world hunger' or 'gender equity',  I think it would be better to list more specific goals, that are attainable. For example, 'a 40%decrease in world hunger' or 'Education for Women where they have no voice'...I would love to believe that we could stop world hunger, but I just don't think it is possible to do in so little time. unfortunately, the world's powers are more focused on things like getting their oil supply, building their arsenals, and sending spaceships out to space.

I think the number one thing that could be done is EDUCATION!! Educating people increases awareness, awareness creates change and development. Women who are more educated are later more liberated, children who attend school later make more money, people who are educated about HIV make smarter choices, etc etc etc....

The website doesn't seem to have any details on the MDG's progress in Poland. I have to say that I read a  Polish 'Newsweek' article 2 years ago, and it spoke about the lack of knowledge about HIV here in Poland. It's quite sad because we are part of the EU, but we are SOO far behind other european nations in terms of the way we deal wtih the disease. Doctors are not trained to inform patients who are HIV positive, employers are legally allowed to fire HIV positive employees, and most teenagers don't even know how to fully prevent it!

Again, this is a matter of Education. Poland has made a lot of progress since the fall of communism, and I think most of the positive change has come through its contact with the outside world. The spread of communication between nations is building relationships and teaching everyone more about the world. I think we're headed in teh right direction, but I don't think these goals will be met by 2015!

I agree with Karolina. Education is very importanta and it's a beginning of eveything. When the education would be better , the better would be knowledge about HIV, about health, mortality, hunger and other things. Maybe people would change their decisions, would have more ideas and possibilities.

I am a voluntear in a charity organization. it is a group of students and when we are helping someone, we choose young people. Lot of our projects are about education and showing to young people other live. I think we have change education progrma in Poland.

There is a big problem with subjects at school about how to behave in family (i am not sure about the translation) but it is also about sexuality. Books which are recommended from the ministry are terrible. Bad education or no education creates a lot of other problems. That is why i agree that it is not very difficult to do and it is veyy important.

To be honest I have never heared about MDG programme before, but  I knew that there are a lot of groups and organizations trying to help society with its problems (like getting rid of hunger, extreme poverty etc) and that UN is surely one of them. In my opinion the key-words in  this case are equality and dignity. After sad historical experience of WW I and II humanity realised, that  developing unity is most importnat now, and it cannot be just words- we need set some goals to fix what we have messed before, the differences in standards of living  all over the world- MDG is a great idea.

The thing is that IMO we're not really good in implementation of all those plans. We have a lot of international agreements  like the ones from  Earth Summits, UE directives and so on, but were already late with most plans.
Making worldwide development projects is a good idea, but on the other hand we can all notice that implementation is hard and complex. What I think is- we need  to set more practical and realistic short-term plans to make long-term ones work.
Important thing is getting more data about situation all over the world. When I entered  MDG Monitor website and saw "Progress by goal" part on Poland I was a bit angry seeing "Insufficient information" statement. Then I started to check other countries and saw a lot of places with same communique. In my opinion we have to know what the situation is before we try to make it better.

I think that Poland is quite advanced inaccomplishment of MDG. We still have problems with environmental sustainability and promoting gender equality (were really close to achieve gender equality, but in my opinion- its not done yet) but  extreme poverty and hunger is not such a big problem here in Poland than in African countries for example.  We all have access to the  primary education and we're taking care of  maternal health.

Important thing for me is that we have no informations about  HIV/AIDS situation in Poland. It was hardest for me to find any data in this area.  Im personally supporting  inform-programmes about HIV  in polish schools.  The thing is I see polish LGBT community and theres still a lot ot make in this area, what is worse  the bigger part of heterosexual  people in Poland think that HIV is only a gay problem.

We should try to make our society more aware of world's biggest problems.

From my point of view idea of setting Millennium Development Goals by the United Nations is a great start. Great start to realize people of so many problems with others struggle every day.

Thanks to the lecture that I watched I learn too many things that I was not aware of. I love the idea of setting this goals.

However  those plans are too optimistic I would say. It would be amazing to handle with poverty and hunger, universal education, gender equality, child health, maternal health, combat HIV, environmental sustainability , global partnership.  It is impossible to achieve such goals on such a short notice.

I agree that we should promote those ideas to protect people from danger of our time and in the same time educate ourselves and make others aware of the problem.

I think that mass media should become apart to raising awareness of society.  It is good to see the big picture of the situation but we should start working on small projects in order to change what is going on. We should recycle, monitor our lights whether they or off when we're out and not to buy food or things that we will not use. To my mind, one of the most important thing is to educate people on things like hunger, sexually transferred diseases, and poverty. It would be a good idea to introduce social campaigns that would not show us the world that is promoted by sitcoms like Gossip Girl or Beverly Hills - world of rich, beautiful and promiscuous individuals; social campaigns should make the society problems visible. Moreover, Poland is a country in which people have less knowledge about problems that are not theirs. We should focus more on the world than on our internal issues. Society should give and reinforce us to become aware of nasty truth. Otherwise, one day we will wake up in the world that will not be a reflection of an  American Dream but rather Third World reality. We do not want that to happen, do we? So we should get involved in such an actions and do our best. I am a strong supporter of ideas of MDG. I would like to raise a question of the small steps that should be undertaken in order to fulfill those goals up to 2015.

To my mind, it was really great that such a global action which include eradicating extreme poverty, reducing child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics such as AIDS, and developing a global partnership for development, started in 2000 year. It is a huge opportunity to change our world and to help other people!

Still it is troublesome to do it. Unfortunately, everyday people meet new obstacles. And it is hard to follow goals!

Today in many countries the state becomes closer to the purpose and in a big step, but there are communities in which problems are still increasing and progressing.

I absolutely agree with previous opinions in this forum, that education is the root, from that it should be started. But I would like to admit the first thing that, to my mind, stands in the way of achieving the goals is lack of real desire to change something for good for others! I mean not enough of people. That's why some goals can not be achieved at a normal level.

I'm not actually from Poland, and I am not so long in the country. So it is difficult for me to say smth connecting to the Millennium Development Goals which may be visible in everyday life in Poland. But believing the statistics the global program has more and more comes to be real!

I hope MDGs will be achieved! :)

I think this would be a great idea.
