This region, recognized for its complex and delicately balanced ecosystems, provides a unique opportunity to explore the conflict between finite ecological resources and seemingly infinite human development demands.
Belem, the program base ideally located at the mouth of the Amazon, has a lush, tropical atmosphere and is a principal center for Amazonian research. Through Amazon River excursions, you gain firsthand insight into studies being undertaken in rain forest villages, research laboratories, extractive industry sites, and archeological sites. This program engages the active peacebuilding community and non-government agencies in the Lake Victoria Basin. Students analyze sources of conflict and root causes, political and social aspects of the genocide, migration and refugee perspectives. It concentrates on traditional and current conflicts in the basin with a focus on Rwanda and Uganda and concludes in Tanzania, where students reflect on the experiences and learn about the United Nations' International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Grounded in a framework of social justice, this program focuses on vulnerable groups, and critiques organizations that respond to their needs.
Classroom seminars are supplemented by lectures and briefings at international and nongovernmental organizations, including the United Nations, the Red Cross, the International Labor Organization, and the World Health Organization.

The Community Public Health summer program provides students with an introduction to basic healthcare issues in a Hispanic Caribbean context and increases their Spanish language skills to the advanced level by advanced Spanish conversation and grammar classes, coursework focused on pre-professional healthcare issues, a community health practicum, and a homestay. There are also excursions throughout the island, an urban community service project, and a one-week stay in a semi rural health clinic.
Academic Program
This seven-week program consists of six weeks of language and healthcare courses, and a weeklong semi-rural clinical field rotation. Students also participate in an urban community service practicum in and around Santiago as part of the academic curriculum.

In this course offered through West Virginia University, students will spend 4 weeks studying in Tanzania to earn 3 credits in Political Science, and 3 credits in English, while volunteering with one of three dynamic community organizations working to improve conditions for women, children, and families in Tanzania: Family Alliance for Development & Cooperation (FADECO), Women Emancipation & Development Agency (WOMEDA), and the Nyakahanga Hospital.

The Sustainability and the Environment program provides an in-depth understanding of sustainability and conservation biology, highlighting the challenges and rewards of identifying and implementing effective projects in a local context. Its goals being to offer students a theoretical foundation of conservation and sustainability, hands-on exposure through visits and an internship, courses in Spanish, and an appreciation of Costa Rican natural history.
Academic Program
The CIEE Study Center in Monteverde has a long tradition of high academic quality in the natural sciences.
